News Source Tries Out Humanizing Sexual Assault Survivor Instead of Rapist This Time

Following the conviction of a man who brutally sexually assaulted a female fellow student at a prestigious college campus, renowned national news source The Wild Times decided to really shake things up this time around and humanize the sexual assault survivor rather than her remorseless rapist in its coverage of the case.

The article began by stating that “the rapist charged with sexually assaulting a high achieving, well rounded female student with a bright future in her area of study was found guilty on Tuesday.”  The story also dabbled in including a wide range of positive facts about the assault survivor, such as “her leadership in many different school organizations, her community volunteer efforts, her impressive academic achievements, and the strength exhibited in her efforts to heal and go on after a stranger violated her on so many levels,” just to name a few.

The Wild Times also tried out discussing the heartbreaking physical and emotional toll experienced by the young woman and her loved ones over the course of the whole nightmare, making it unquestionably clear who the true victim was in the ordeal and leaving readers with a sense that the article’s author isn’t a garbage human.

Not found in the article’s paragraphs were any mentions of the convicted rapist’s irrelevant background, accomplishments, or sad feelings about facing consequences to crimes he definitely committed against the resilient woman. To really take the experiment all the way, The Wild Times did choose to include details of how much irresponsible drinking the now registered sex offender had done the night of the assault, what he was wearing, his history of enjoying sex on previous occasions, and any prior unwholesome behavior no matter how unrelated to this particular offense.
The article closed with a bold statement acknowledging, “what the rapist did to this woman and his fundamental disregard for consent was beyond wrong” before praising her journey toward healing and wishing the best for her future, thus concluding the news source’s fleeting experiment with reporting a story like this in a way that isn’t awful.

  1. I’m glad you are challenging us to wake up and see the proper perspective on how the media and in general all of our society victimizes the ACTUAL victims of sexual violence.
