A mystery no more! Loyal viewers of The Gilded Age were rewarded during Sunday night’s season 2 finale when a game-changing reveal finally confirmed one of the most popular fan theories – that Ward McAllister, the charming arbiter of social rules and style in 1880s New York, is in fact the great-great-great-great grandfather of Kevin McCallister, the kid in Home Alone.

In a long-awaited sequence, Ward McAllister experienced a flash-forward at a fortune teller’s booth to see how many generations into the future his wealth would extend. Mr. McAllister found himself in the year 1990 and witnessed an 8-year-old Kevin booby trap a large, stunning home that clearly uses a significant amount of electricity, thus telling Ward that his family will still be rich for over one hundred years to come. Minds blown!
Many fans were eager to find out how and why the spelling of the name McAllister changed by one letter to McCallister sometime between the 1880s and 1990s, but show creator and executive producer Julian Fellowes said that viewers will have to wait a little longer for those answers. “Since the pilot, I’ve known that Ward was Kevin’s great-great-great-great grandfather. Everything in the show – and I mean everything – has been leading up to this truth about the connection between Ward and the kid who makes that face before he destroys those burglars all by himself. Now you’ll just have to tune in for season 3 to see the fallout. It’s going to affect everyone in the story, even the carriage drivers.” We’re already counting down to next season!
This end of season reveal that Ward McAllister and Kevin McCallister are connected by blood changes things in a huge way, mainly in that The Gilded Age is officially a prequel series to the Home Alone film franchise.
Fans have already eagerly begun to debate whether The Gilded Age series can now be considered a Christmas movie.
